I'm Perfect, You're Doomed: Tales from a Jehovah's Witness Upbringing eBook edition by Kyria Abrahams

The first half of Kyria Abraham's I'm Perfect You're Doomed is like taking a trip to strange land.  It looks familiar, the people sound the same but the culture is very different.  The inhabitants have peculiar superstitions and curious rituals.

Kyria takes us on a tour and explains.  In this land the Devil is hiding in Smurfs and lurking at yard sales. Only repeating the word "Jehovah" over and over again will drive out evil.  Inhabitants do not dance or smoke but alcohol is permitted.  The people do not celebrate holidays, value education or socialize with foreigners.

Growing up this was her world.  A world in which these beliefs were accepted without question.  And where it was hip to be holy and zealous.  Her (slightly twisted) sense of humor keeps you entertained and amused.

The tone change as she enters her teenage years and battles with OCD, her sexuality and a creeping apostasy. Her solution?  Get married!

From here on the story is like the proverbial train wreck. Disgusting and riveting.  Abrahams carefully chronicles her depression and loneliness as she attempts to replace the void left by her religion.  She is painfully honest about her ventures into adultery, alcohol and suicide.

This book ends as she finally seizes responsibility for her life and begins to grow up.  I suspect that is a more interesting story in the long run.  Hopefully she will write it someday.

I was deeply affected by this book. I found it by turns disgusting, exhilarating, terrifying and hopeful.  With all those conflicting emotions it is hard to write a simple review.  In the end I was glad I read it and you will be too.

Here is the publisher's note:

I'm Perfect, You're Doomed is the story of Kyria Abrahams's coming-of-age as a Jehovah's Witness -- a doorbell-ringing "Pioneer of the Lord." Her childhood was haunted by the knowledge that her neighbors and schoolmates were doomed to die in an imminent fiery apocalypse; that Smurfs were evil; that just about anything you could buy at a yard sale was infested by demons; and that Ouija boards -- even if they were manufactured by Parker Brothers -- were portals to hell. Never mind how popular you are when you hand out the Watchtower instead of candy at Halloween.

When Abrahams turned eighteen, things got even stranger. That's when she found herself married to a man she didn't love, with adultery her only way out. "Disfellowshipped" and exiled from the only world she'd ever known, Abrahams realized that the only people who could save her were the very sinners she had prayed would be smitten by God's wrath.

Raucously funny, deeply unsettling, and written with scorching wit and deep compassion, I'm Perfect, You're Doomed explores the ironic absurdity of growing up believing that nothing matters because everything's about to be destroyed.

Read And You Be The Judge, What Feels Right?

picalttag

'Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day' by Joel Osteen. There are few things I love to eat more than bread. I just love a good loaf of white bread. I eat it the way many people eat junk food (and, I suppose, one could argue that it is junk food). As I thought about Joel Osteen's new book, Become a Better You, I was reminded of that sad, pathetic little loaf of bread because this book, like that bread, is form without substance. This is Osteen's second book, and the follow-up to his bestselling Your Best Life Now. Like the previous title, this one features a picture of the smiling pastor on the front cover and offers seven steps to a better life. Like Your Best Life Now, much of the book follows this format. The book is divided into seven parts, which together are sure to improve your life every day. "What does it mean to become a better you? First, you must understand that God wants you to become all that He created you to be. Second, it is imperative that you realize that God will do His part, but you must do your part as well. As I closed the cover on this book I began to wonder, What is it that draws people to Joel Osteen? Why do people enjoy his teaching so much? I think the secret to Osteen's success is this: he teaches self-help but wraps it in a thin guise of Christian terminology. Thus people believe they are being taught the Bible when the reality is that they are learning mere human wisdom rather than divine wisdom. You Decide and please write a review and let me know your thoughts…

'The Third Jesus: The Christ We Cannot Ignore' by Deepak Chopra. Deepak Chopra's new book is not quite as controversial as I expected it to be. "The Third Jesus" seems to be written with a sense of compassion. For the first half of the book he expounds on Christ's teachings. I was impressed with his insight, wisdom, research and knowledge. There are some striking similarities between some Eastern beliefs and Jesus' message, like the idea of karma. For the most part this seems to make Jesus available to a larger audience. I thought this book would have been much more effective if it stayed true to its intent which is to show that we all have the power to become Jesus-like, instead of taking the occasional shots at politics and organized Christianity. Like I said about the ebook above… Read it and you be the judge… Use the Coupon Code below for a Discount on either of these two eBook Titles.

Great Christian eBook!

I thought this book was a great addition to the few Christian books. I thought "Mr. Fields" put a lot of time and dedication into this book. He has been an influence to young writers in his creative writing classes, (me being one of them) and I think that if word gets out, it could be popular. THUMBS UP TO MR. FIELDS!!! :)

A Life Changing Book

This book takes us on a fascinating journey seen through the eyes of a young North American who spends years in an ancient monastery in Tibet, learning the ancient teachings of the Children of the Law of One - a non-dogmatic spiritual order that's been around for thousands of years, stretching back to the time of the construction of the Great pyramid and before that, Atlantis. Although the ancient history of this order is fascinating, it serves merely as a background to their far more important spiritual teachings that range from the history and origin of Mankind to what's behind all the problems and suffering in this world and the solution to that. The Children of the law of One teach that all suffering is the result of people forgetting their oneness with everything and everyone in this Universe and through this ignorance, act selfishly. The solution therefore is people regaining that sense of oneness through practicing the Golden Rule of Loving others Unselfishly. I have never read anything this pure and profound - these teachings have the feel of unspoiled truth to them. My search for answers to all my spiritual questions that I couldn't get from any religion, books or people, were finally answered and put together in this book in a way that really makes sense. Their beautifully simple but extremely powerful message of Oneness through Unselfish Love has totally changed the course of my life, for the better. I have read many other spirituality books and I whole-heartedly agree with others who have read this book that this is one of, if not THE MOST PROFOUND SPIRITUAL BOOK EVER WRITTEN. I understand that's a huge statement to make, especially if written in capitals like that. So don't take my word for it - read this book, it may be the turning point in YOUR life!A viewer from CO, USA

Practise What You Preach

picalttag

Attention Readers: This blog entry was written by Maverick Majors one of my eBooks About Crew.

'Your Best Life Now:'
by Joel Osteen. If you believe that Christianity is getting as much as you can as a fast as possible plus that new BMW in 7 easy steps - than this may be the book for you. If you believe, the Christmas spirit is berating "lowly" airline flight attendants during the Christmas travel rush than try this one out. If you are a Christian who believes in charity, helping others and volunteering during Christmas to help the poor than this is not the book for you. Many pastors and priests during this Christmas season are collecting toys for poor children, preparing Christmas dinners for the homeless and poor, visiting shut-ins and older people who are too ill to attend church, preparing for Christmas mass and services. Joel Osteen and his wife are skiing in Vail. Mind you, this took place back in 2005 but nonetheless, I just get a little uneasy about Super Pastors, of Super Church's. If you believe that baby Jesus was born in a manager of straw in a stable with gentle animals on Christmas Eve than you may not like this book. If you also believe that Jesus led a life of poverty and charity in helping others than avoid this one. If you believe that baby Jesus was born in a 5-star ski resort in Vail and that he wants you to follow seven steps to get that BMW 750i then read on. I recently watched a Sermon of Joel Osteen's on the T.V. He went on and on… about how to be comfortable in your own skin and not to worry about big noses, being ugly etc. that as Long as you Love yourself God will love you and you can expect to go to heaven. Bla, bla, bla. That same week I saw a 60 minutes or similar type interview with Joel and his wife Victoria and Those two have had more botox and collagen injections than Joan Rivers! Practice what you preach. I just can't believe that people don't see through this crap and his books have been on the NY Times Bestsellers List for weeks!

'The Daring Book for Girls' by Miriam Peskowitz. This eBook is chock-full of fascinating, fun and useful information. The sections on slumber party games and campfire "sit-around's" evoked happy childhood memories; and the sports, tire changing, and finance entries contained information I wish I'd had access too in my own youth! I am grateful to Buchanan and Peskowitz for solving the annual dilemma of what to give the girls --but this book is not just for girls and women. The teenage boys will probably be intrigued by it, too. Use the Coupon Code below to receive a Discount on either of These two eBook Titles.

Having A Quest Is A Wonderful Thing

picalttag

'Quest For God' by Paul M. Johnson. I do not really have any interest in Catholic doctrine. Many of the subjects Johnson writes about I know little or nothing about. But what I did find in the book is a deep personal quest of an individual to be in relation with a personal God. I found the story of this quest and of Johnson's faith instructive and illuminating. I think that anyone who takes the idea of a personal God seriously will be able to learn from this work.

'Yoga & The Path Of The Urban Mystic' by Darren Main. This book is really fun and easy to read. it's unpretentious, honest, and good natured in its discussion of the mental hurdles, internal conflicts, and regular friction that arise in our lives daily. Anybody who has read a lot of what they call mystical, esoteric, or religious texts will especially enjoy the combination of simplicity, sincerity, and depth that the author has infused this eBook with. Check below for the Coupon Code to receive a Discount on these two eBook Titles.
