The first half of Kyria Abraham's I'm Perfect You're Doomed is like taking a trip to strange land. It looks familiar, the people sound the same but the culture is very different. The inhabitants have peculiar superstitions and curious rituals.

Kyria takes us on a tour and explains. In this land the Devil is hiding in Smurfs and lurking at yard sales. Only repeating the word "Jehovah" over and over again will drive out evil. Inhabitants do not dance or smoke but alcohol is permitted. The people do not celebrate holidays, value education or socialize with foreigners.

Growing up this was her world. A world in which these beliefs were accepted without question. And where it was hip to be holy and zealous. Her (slightly twisted) sense of humor keeps you entertained and amused.

The tone change as she enters her teenage years and battles with OCD, her sexuality and a creeping apostasy. Her solution? Get married!

From here on the story is like the proverbial train wreck. Disgusting and riveting. Abrahams carefully chronicles her depression and loneliness as she attempts to replace the void left by her religion. She is painfully honest about her ventures into adultery, alcohol and suicide.

This book ends as she finally seizes responsibility for her life and begins to grow up. I suspect that is a more interesting story in the long run. Hopefully she will write it someday.

I was deeply affected by this book. I found it by turns disgusting, exhilarating, terrifying and hopeful. With all those conflicting emotions it is hard to write a simple review. In the end I was glad I read it and you will be too.

As I closed the cover on this book I began to wonder, What is it that draws people to Joel Osteen? Why do people enjoy his teaching so much? I think the secret to Osteen's success is this: he teaches self-help but wraps it in a thin guise of Christian terminology. 'The Third Jesus: The Christ We Cannot Ignore' by Deepak Chopra. Deepak Chopra's new book is not quite as controversial as I expected it to be. "The Third Jesus" seems to be written with a sense of compassion. For the first half of the book he expounds on Christ's teachings. I was impressed with his insight, wisdom, research and knowledge. There are some striking similarities between some Eastern beliefs and Jesus' message, like the idea of karma. For the most part this seems to make Jesus available to a larger audience. I thought this book would have been much more effective if it stayed true to its intent which is to show that we all have the power to become Jesus-like, instead of taking the occasional shots at politics and organized Christianity. 'Your Best Life Now:' by Joel Osteen. If you believe that Christianity is getting as much as you can as a fast as possible plus that new BMW in 7 easy steps - than this may be the book for you. If you believe, the Christmas spirit is berating "lowly" airline flight attendants during the Christmas travel rush than try this one out. If you are a Christian who believes in charity, helping others and volunteering during Christmas to help the poor than this is not the book for you. Many pastors and priests during this Christmas season are collecting toys for poor children, preparing Christmas dinners for the homeless and poor, visiting shut-ins and older people who are too ill to attend church, preparing for Christmas mass and services. Joel Osteen and his wife are skiing in Vail. Mind you, this took place back in 2005 but nonetheless, I just get a little uneasy about Super Pastors, of Super Church's. If you believe that baby Jesus was born in a manager of straw in a stable with gentle animals on Christmas Eve than you may not like this book. If you also believe that Jesus led a life of poverty and charity in helping others than avoid this one. If you believe that baby Jesus was born in a 5-star ski resort in Vail and that he wants you to follow seven steps to get that BMW 750i then read on. I recently watched a Sermon of Joel Osteen's on the T.V. He went on and on… about how to be comfortable in your own skin and not to worry about big noses, being ugly etc. that as Long as you Love yourself God will love you and you can expect to go to heaven. Bla, bla, bla. That same week I saw a 60 minutes or similar type interview with Joel and his wife Victoria and Those two have had more botox and collagen injections than Joan Rivers! Practice what you preach. I just can't believe that people don't see through this crap and his books have been on the NY Times Bestsellers List for weeks!

'The Daring Book for Girls' by Miriam Peskowitz. This eBook is chock-full of fascinating, fun and useful information. The sections on slumber party games and campfire "sit-around's" evoked happy childhood memories; and the sports, tire changing, and finance entries contained information I wish I'd had access too in my own youth! I am grateful to Buchanan and Peskowitz for solving the annual dilemma of what to give the girls --but this book is not just for girls and women. 'Quest For God' by Paul M. Johnson. I do not really have any interest in Catholic doctrine. Many of the subjects Johnson writes about I know little or nothing about. But what I did find in the book is a deep personal quest of an individual to be in relation with a personal God. I found the story of this quest and of Johnson's faith instructive and illuminating. I think that anyone who takes the idea of a personal God seriously will be able to learn from this work.

This book is really fun and easy to read. it's unpretentious, honest, and good natured in its discussion of the mental hurdles, internal conflicts, and regular friction that arise in our lives daily. His impeccable credentials (Oxford) and his usual penchant for exhaustive scholarly research (The Intellectuals, History of the Jews, History of Christianity, etc.) were surprisingly absent. This book is thoroughly Catholic - not necessarily a bad thing mind you. This eBook needs at least two careful readings before judgment can be passed upon it. Useless Information and Heaven

Do you think we need to know Useless information when we get to Heaven? These two eBooks do not have much in common but I found them to be entertaining and thoughtful. I read these two titles based on the reviews. The book of Useless Information is just that... Useless but a fun read and it's nice to be able to casually throw in an interesting fact about a topic at a party or get together that most likely nobody knows about. I found it to boost my ego a bit for people perceive you as the guy/gal who knows things... Yeah ok... The topic that nobody really knows about is what is Heaven like. Sure there are multitudes of books out there that talk about near death experiences but I found that 90 Minutes in Heaven was sincere and believable. However, not enough to look forward to experience the glories of heaven (Yet). I can wait my turn, whenever that may be. I will say that after reading this eBook I now have some tools that will help if I loose a loved one or dealing with death.
